Suicide Has Struck Our Town Again–Please Support Project Bald–It’s Urgent

“There’s something happening here,

But what it is ain’t exactly clear,

There’s a man with a gun over there,

Tellin’ me I’ve got to beware,

I think it’s time we stop, children, what’s that sound?

Everybody look at what’s going down.”

-Buffalo Springfield, “For What It’s Worth”, 1966

Shockingly, the plague of suicide has once again struck our small town of Chappaqua.  Earlier this week, a 20 year old male college student took his own life by shooting himself in his family’s home, which is about a 90 second walk around the corner from our own.

This is the third suicide in our community, starting with Jeff’s, in the last 2 ¼ years.  For a small town, that number is astronomical and terrifying. Our hearts go out to the young man’s family.  This incident strikes particularly close to home, not only because of the proximity to us of the shooting, but because Carey knows the victim’s mother well and is devastated for her, knowing the magnitude of the pain that she will endure.  Carey describes her as an extremely sweet person who spoke about her son frequently, and always with love and pride.  Sound familiar?

This has got to stop.

Tarzan and Mo’s wonderful initiative, Project Bald, was borne out of their love for Jeff, and this is beautiful.  Now, however, we need to make this about much more than Jeff.  This has to be about doing everything we can to eradicate this horrific plague from our society.  Scores of young men and women, many from loving homes, are killing themselves.  Several friends have said to me since Jeff died that if something like this could happen to Carey and me, it could happen to any family.  At the risk of coming across in the wrong way, I have to say that I believe they are right.  All parents and their children are at risk, so we must all take this issue seriously and personally.

I have always been reluctant to solicit donations, even for the best of causes, especially in a tough economy.  It just makes me uncomfortable. But this latest incident has struck a raw nerve in me, and I must ask all readers of this blog to at least consider making a donation to the American Foundation for Suicide prevention on Project Bald’s page. Here is the link. (

Literally any amount is deeply appreciated, and donations can be made on an anonymous basis if desired.  Tarzan, Mo, and our family send our most heartfelt thanks to those who have donated thus far.  We have less than a month to go before Jeff’s birthday, the date on which several of our fundraisers located around the world will be shaving, dying and doing other drastic things to their hair in support of this cause.  A list of these wonderful people and what they will be doing can be viewed when you click on the link.

In my wildest dreams, I never envisioned myself making a plea of this type, but under the circumstances I feel compelled to do so.  For Jeff.  For all of the other victims and their families worldwide who have been devastated by suicide.  And for all families who may be at risk and not know it.

Thank you so much for your consideration

Tragic seems to be an understatement. There are no words to describe this. Telling and sharing must be a place to begin combatting this.
